What if you tried one snoring solution and it failed? And another one failed. And another. Are you doomed to surgery as a last resort? Not necessarily. You might need a combination of snoring solutions to solve your problem.
My father-in-law snores like Goldilock’s three bears all lined up in a row. We used to be able to hear him across the house when they would come to visit. His wife was beside herself and beyond frustrated with having to sleep through the noise.
He tried a number of different ways to stop snoring but nothing seemed to work. It wasn’t until he lucked into using a couple of different tricks together that he was able to have a significant impact on his snoring.
His snoring was the result of a number of things. His weight, allergies, and the foods he ate were all working against him. Nasal strips work well for those who snore because their nose is congested but that only fixed one of his problems. When the snoring continued, the figured the strips weren’t working. Not true. He just had a couple of other issues to deal with.
His wife noticed, of course, that the snoring was far worse when he was laying on his back. A wedge pillow helped with that issue. Not only could he use it to keep his upper body elevated in bed while he slept, lessening his congestion and the pressure on his neck, but he could also place it behind his back if he slept on his side to keep him from rolling over onto his back.
The final item he needed to add to his arsenal was a nose spray to further relieve his congestion.
So, his routine goes something like this:
- Nasal spray 15-30 minutes before bedtime
- Mentholated nasal strip applied 15 minutes before bedtime
- Wedge pillow to keep him from sleeping on his back
This seems to have done the trick for him. Using a combination of snoring solutions – each addressing a specific cause – has nearly stopped his snoring completely. I know for a fact, his wife is happier than ever.
